How do I get a thumbnail from my video? Free frame grabber

Open your video here and press Find the sharpest frames: the tool scans the whole video, skips black and blurry frames and shows the sharpest ones first. Click one to save it as a 16:9 JPG under 2 MB (1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160), the size YouTube asks for. The video never leaves your device.

Grab frames from your video

Your video stays on your device. It plays in this tab and the frames are drawn right here.

How to use the frame grabber

  1. Choose your video. The final edit or the raw recording both work. If the browser cannot play the file (some MKV or ProRes files), export a short MP4 of the part you want.
  2. Press "Find the sharpest frames". The tool looks at 48 moments spread across the video, measures how much fine detail each frame has and how bright it is, and shows the 8 best, sharpest first.
  3. Fine-tune. Click a result to jump there, then use the one-frame buttons. A face mid-blink or a gameplay frame mid-explosion is often one or two frames away from a clean one.
  4. Save it at 1920 x 1080 (or 3840 x 2160 if your video is 4K). If the video is not 16:9, the tool crops the middle to 16:9 so YouTube does not add bars.
  5. Add the text and the face in your image editor, then check it next to other videos with the thumbnail preview tool.

What makes a frame good for a thumbnail

When I edit long-form Roblox and Minecraft videos, the thumbnail frame almost never comes from the most exciting second of the video: that second is usually the blurriest. It comes from the moment just before or after, when the camera settles. The scan is built around that. For upload settings of the video itself, see the export settings calculator.

FAQ

How do I get a thumbnail from my video?
Open the video in this tool, press “Find the sharpest frames” and pick one of the results, or pause on the moment you want and step frame by frame. Save it as a JPG at 1280 x 720 or larger, then add your text and face in any image editor before you upload it to YouTube.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube Help asks for a 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide and now recommends 3840 x 2160; 1280 x 720 is still fine. JPG, PNG or GIF, under 2 MB if you upload from your phone and under 50 MB from a computer.
Why are the frames I pause on blurry?
Most video frames carry motion blur, especially in gameplay and handheld footage. The tool measures the edge detail of each scanned frame and puts the sharpest ones first, and it skips frames that are almost black. A frame from a moment where the camera and the subject are still is almost always the sharpest.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video plays inside your browser and the frames are drawn on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved.
Can I use a frame from my video as the whole thumbnail?
You can, and some channels do, but most big channels add a face, a few words of text or an arrow on top. A sharp, well-lit frame is the starting point; use the thumbnail preview tool to see how it looks next to other videos before you publish.

Who made this

I'm Kevin Tabares. I've edited long-form YouTube videos since 2015 (1,277 videos and 152.2M+ views tracked on YT Jobs), mostly Roblox and Minecraft gaming, plus narrated documentaries. Pulling clean frames for thumbnails is something I do for almost every video, so I built the step I repeat most. If you want an editor for your channel, get in touch.
