YouTube Thumbnail Preview Tool: see your thumbnail and title on YouTube before you upload
Drop in your thumbnail, type your title, and see how they look on the YouTube home feed, in search, in the suggested sidebar and on a phone, in dark and light mode. It also checks the size, the 16:9 shape, the 100-character title limit and where your title gets cut off. You can load up to 3 thumbnails to compare them side by side.

YouTube thumbnail size and rules (2026)
YouTube Help recommends custom thumbnails that:
- Use a 16:9 shape for regular videos (9:16 for Shorts).
- Are as sharp as possible: YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. 1280 × 720 still works and is what most editors export.
- Are a JPG or PNG file.
- Stay under the upload limit: 2 MB from a phone, 50 MB from a computer.
Titles can be up to 100 characters, but feeds show only about two lines, so the first 40 to 60 characters do most of the work. Source: Add video thumbnails and Edit video settings, YouTube Help, read October 17, 2026.
What to look for in the preview
- The small sizes. In the suggested sidebar a thumbnail is about 168 pixels wide. If the face or the main object is not readable there, simplify it.
- The bottom-right corner. The length badge covers it. Keep text and faces out of that corner.
- Where the title is cut. The tool marks every layout where your title does not fit. Put the words that make people click before the cut.
- Thumbnail and title together. They should say two different things: the image shows the moment, the title adds what the image cannot.
- Light mode. Dark thumbnails with dark edges blend into dark mode; check both.
