Why are YouTube editors so expensive? (and is $50 a video too little)

Direct answer: Because a long video takes many hours: about 8 to 12 to edit 10 minutes of commentary and 20 to 40 for a 20-minute gaming video. Eleven public hourly-rate sources start at a median $20 an hour, so 10 hours is about $200. Fiverr basic packages start at a median $50, covering a median 3 finished minutes.

Where do the hours go?

From my own planning ranges (they are estimates, not a study): a 5-minute vlog takes about 6 to 8 hours, a 10-minute commentary video 8 to 12, a 20-minute gaming video 20 to 40 and a 60-minute podcast 40 to 60. That is roughly 0.7 to 2 hours per finished minute. The time goes on going through the raw footage, choosing every cut, sound, music, graphics and text, color, and then the revision rounds. More raw footage per finished minute means more hours.

Is $50 a video too little to pay a YouTube editor?

Not automatically. It depends on what the $50 covers. On Fiverr, $50 was the median starting price on October 15, 2026, and those basic packages covered a median of 3 finished minutes. For a short or simple edit (cutting silences, a few titles, music), $50 can be a fair price, and editors building a portfolio or living where costs are lower can take it and do good work.

For a full 10-minute video with graphics and sound work, the hours change the picture: at 8 to 12 hours, $50 works out to about $4 to $6 an hour (my calculation), below the $10 entry-level median in Upwork's contract data. The risk then is not quality on day one but whether the editor can keep it up every week. Before you agree a price, ask:
