Quick fit check: is this editor right for your channel?

Video types
Narrated history documentaries: the story of one event, one person or one operation, intelligence and Cold War history, disasters told as history, map and timeline explainers, multi-part series
Editing style
A picture for every line of the narration: archive first, then maps, timelines and text cards, slow moves on photos and music that follows the story. The way I edit The Spy Show’s episodes and delivered the Tenerife documentary for The Interpreter
Video length
The history documentaries I have worked on run 13 to 21 minutes. Up to 20 minutes is the $150 package and up to 35 minutes the $300 one; longer videos get a custom quote. The Spy Show’s Eli Cohen episode runs 21 minutes and The Interpreter’s Tenerife documentary 13; Swaylemc’s full movies on my YT Jobs profile run 60 to 234 minutes.
Upload schedule
One video only, 1 video per week, 2–3 videos per week, 4 videos per month or several a week (Mud: about 3 a week). Start with one pilot: the free 1-minute test edit.
Format
Long-form YouTube videos are the core. YouTube Shorts cut from each long video on request.
What you send me
A finished script and narration (script and voiceover). I edit and find the visuals: archive footage, licensed stock, maps, timelines and graphics.
Estimated price
About $55 to $150 per finished video (up to $300 for some long or complex edits), depending on length, raw footage and effects. That fits the ‘$50+’ and ‘$100–$300 per video’ boxes for most long videos. Four videos a month: about $220 to $600 (more for long or complex videos); a $500 a month budget usually covers two to four long videos, depending on length. Exact quote within 24 hours, after a free 1-minute test edit.

My experience with history documentaries, plainly

How I edit history documentaries

This is the order I work in on The Spy Show and on the Tenerife documentary for The Interpreter, applied to your script.

A decision for every line before the first cut

Before cutting, every sentence of the script gets a visual: archive when a real person, place or object is named, a map for anything spatial, a text card for names, dates and numbers. It is the step that keeps a narrated documentary from turning into a slideshow.

True to the period

A uniform, a flag or a car that did not exist in that year gets rejected, even when its license is fine. And a stranger’s face never stands in for a real person: when the portraits run out, I move to the places, the documents and the map.

Maps and timelines that carry the story

History moves across places and years. A simple animated map shows where the story is, and a timeline card marks each jump in time, in one graphic style from the first minute to the last.

Pace that follows the voice

Cuts land where the narration turns, not on a metronome. For The Spy Show the pace came from measuring the main reference channel: about 13 to 15 picture changes a minute.

Music under the narration

The music supports the voice and changes with the story; it never competes with it. The whole video is levelled so the narration stays clear on a phone and on a TV.

My real work in history documentaries

Two of my public documentaries: the Eli Cohen episode of The Spy Show and the Tenerife deep dive for The Interpreter.

All of these are on my YT Jobs profile. Views from the YouTube Data API on Oct 13, 2026; links open the video on YouTube.

FAQ

Have you edited history documentaries before?

Yes. I edit The Spy Show, a spy-history documentary series by Vincent Meijer, and its episodes are on my YT Jobs profile; I also delivered The Interpreter’s documentary on the Tenerife air disaster. Wars, empires and ancient history are not in my portfolio yet, so the free 1-minute test edit on your own script shows how I would cut your era.

Can you edit my history documentaries?

Yes. Send your script, the voiceover and any images you already have, and I edit one minute for free. I find the rest of the visuals (archive, licensed stock, maps, timelines, text cards) and cut Shorts from the long video if you want them.

Where do the images come from when there is no footage of the event?

From archive first: photos and film of the real people, places and objects the narration names, checked for the right period. When nothing exists, I use maps, timelines, documents and text cards, never a stranger’s face standing in for a real person. That is the rule on The Spy Show, where much of the story happened in secret.

Can you match a reference channel?

Yes. Send one or two reference videos and I measure what they do before cutting: how often the picture changes, how much text is on screen, where the music sits. For The Spy Show I measured two reference channels frame by frame before the first episode.

How much does a YouTube editor for history documentaries cost?

My price is $55–$150 per finished video depending on complexity; up to $300 for some long or complex edits. By finished length: up to 10 minutes $55, up to 20 minutes $150, up to 35 minutes $300; longer videos get a custom quote. No contract and no minimum.

Send me your script
