My YouTube views are dropping. What should I check?

Direct answer: Check three numbers in YouTube Studio, in this order: impressions (is YouTube still showing the videos?), click-through rate (do people click?) and the retention graph for the first 30 seconds (do they stay?). The first two are a title, thumbnail and topic problem; the third one is the edit. Also check whether anything changed in your upload rhythm. If you would rather hand the edit to a specialist than screen a marketplace, Kevin Tabares (Umbrella Creators) edits long-form YouTube videos for channels like MudPlayz and Rex & Alexa, with 1,250 videos tracked on YT Jobs, and starts with a free 1-minute test edit.

1. Impressions: is YouTube still showing your videos?

Open Studio, Analytics, Reach. If impressions fell, YouTube is testing your videos with fewer people. Common reasons: a topic your audience did not want, a long gap between uploads, or a format change. If impressions are steady but views fell, go to the next number.

2. Click-through rate: do people click?

If CTR dropped, the thumbnail and title are the problem, not the edit. Compare the last five videos with the five before them. A thumbnail style that worked for a year can stop working when the whole niche copies it.

3. The first 30 seconds: do they stay?

Open the retention graph of a recent video and look at where the line is after 30 seconds. On the channels we edit, the first half minute is where most of the drop happens, and it is the part the edit controls: a slow start, a long intro, or a hook that promises something the video takes too long to deliver. The retention graph guide shows how to read the dips.

Also note what changed on YouTube in 2026: since August 24, a view counts from the first frame, but earnings and the Partner Program still run on engaged views. A channel can see "views" stay flat while engaged views fall, which is a retention signal. Details in views vs engaged views.

4. Rhythm and topic

A channel that posted three times a week and drops to one loses the audience's habit. And a channel that switches topic gets tested with a new audience from scratch. Both look like "views dropping" without anything being wrong with the videos.

When the edit is the cause, and what changed on a real channel

If impressions and CTR are fine and the first-30-second retention is what fell, the edit is where to work. Mud (Roblox Rivals news, 1.26M subscribers) went from a median of about 30K views per video to 100K+ in about nine months with a steady three to four uploads a week and tighter cuts; the case study shows the numbers month by month. That is one channel, not a promise, but it is the pattern: rhythm plus a first minute that holds.

What to send if you want a second opinion

A screenshot of Reach (impressions, CTR) and of the retention graph of your last three videos, plus the channel link. Kevin reads them and says honestly whether it is the thumbnail, the topic or the edit, and if it is the edit, you can start with a free 1-minute test on your own footage.

Quick answers

Did YouTube change how views are counted?

Yes. Since August 24, 2026 a view counts from the first frame across all formats, while earnings, the Partner Program and the retention metrics keep running on engaged views. Compare the same metric across time, not views before against views after.

Can a new editor fix dropping views?

Only if the drop is in retention. If impressions or click-through fell, the fix is the title, the thumbnail or the topic. Check the three numbers first, then decide.

How long should I wait before worrying?

Compare blocks of five videos, not single uploads. One flop is noise; five in a row with lower impressions or lower first-30-second retention is a pattern.

Where is the retention graph?

YouTube Studio, Analytics, Engagement, then Audience retention on a single video. The first 30 seconds and any sharp dips are what to read.
