How to edit GTA 6 videos for YouTube: a long-form workflow from session to upload
Edit a GTA 6 video in five passes: log the session while you play, pick the cut (a part, a story video or a full movie), build a cold open without graphic violence, add a chapter per mission, then fix audio and spoilers before export. Long sessions arrive as 1-hour PS5 files, so organize them first.
This guide is part of GTA 6 video ideas and launch plan.
The workflow at a glance
- Organize the files. Name every recording by session and order before you open the editor; a PS5 recording stops at 1 hour (Sony).
- Log while you play. Note the time of every chase, fail, laugh and story beat; it saves hours of rewatching.
- Choose the cut. A walkthrough part, a story video, a reaction or a full movie; each has its own length and rules.
- Build a clean cold open. The hook in the first seconds, without graphic violence in the first 7 (YouTube).
- Cut the dead time. Drives between missions, menus, loading screens and retries go; the escalation stays.
- Add chapters. One per mission, starting at 00:00, at least three, each 10 seconds or longer (YouTube).
- Protect the story. A spoiler-free title, thumbnail and chapter names, and a warning at the start of story parts.
- Fix the audio and export. Voice over game, the radio checked for claimable songs, one loudness for the whole video.
1. Organize the footage before you edit
- One folder per session, files numbered in order. A three-hour session on the console’s built-in capture reaches the editor as at least three files, because each PS5 recording stops at 1 hour.
- Keep your voice on its own track if you can. With a capture card and a separate microphone track, the voice can be cleaned and balanced against the game instead of being stuck inside it (how to record for an editor).
- Write two lines per session while it’s fresh: the missions you played and anything that went wrong with the recording.
2. Log the moments while you play
A moment log is a plain list: the time in the recording, what happened and whether it is worth keeping. A few seconds of typing during a session save you from rewatching all of it later. An example of what one looks like (made-up moments, real format):
| Time | Moment | Keep? |
|---|---|---|
| 0:12:40 | A chase starts after a failed robbery | Yes: cold-open candidate |
| 0:31:05 | Mission failed, restart | Cut the retry, keep the reaction |
| 1:04:20 | Story cutscene | Whole in a full movie, trimmed in a story video |
3. Choose the cut: part, story video, reaction or full movie
The same session can become four different videos. Decide which one before you cut, because each keeps different things:
| Cut | Length to aim for | Real example of the format | What stays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walkthrough part | As long as the part needs; Typical Gamer’s last two parts each ran past an hour and a half | “Marvel's Wolverine PS5 Gameplay Walkthrough, Part 6!” (1:33:02, 46K views) | Every mission in order; travel and retries trimmed |
| Story or highlights video | The GTA middle range: 17 to 43 minutes | “This Might Be My BEST HEIST GETAWAY...” (25:16, 59K views) | The best beats with a clear start, twist and end |
| Reaction or breakdown | The source plus your commentary | “GTA HATER Sees GTA 6 For The First Time” (22:46, 117K views) | Your reaction on screen and only the parts you react to |
| Full movie | Many hours | “GTA 5 FULL MOVIE with Typical Gamer!” (15:02:01, 265K views) | Cutscenes and key gameplay in story order, little commentary |
The middle range comes from 51 GTA videos on six big channels that I read on October 13, 2026; what to make in each week of the launch is in the GTA 6 ideas and launch plan.
4. The first seconds: a hook without gore
YouTube gives no ads to videos with severe graphic game violence in the first seven seconds (YouTube), and the opening is also where viewers decide whether to stay (more on openings). So the cold open has two jobs: show the most exciting moment that isn’t gory, and promise what the video delivers. Openings that do both:
- A chase with the wanted stars climbing, cut before the crash.
- The setup line of the mission, then a hard cut to the title.
- Your reaction to what is coming, with the moment itself saved for later in the video.
The thumbnail, blur, NPC and music rules are in the 7-second rule guide.
5. Cut the dead time, keep the escalation
- Cut: drives between missions, menus, loading screens, failed attempts after the first one and long silences.
- Compress the drives that matter instead of deleting them: a few seconds of the route or the map tell the viewer where they are.
- Keep the escalation: a wanted level climbing is a tension meter the game gives you for free; leave it on screen in chases.
- Cut on the impact, the crash or the explosion, not after it, and hold the reaction.
Pacing for gaming videos in general, from facecam to music, is in the gaming editing guide.
6. Chapters: one per mission
YouTube builds chapters from the timestamps in your description: the first must be 00:00, there must be at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must last at least 10 seconds (YouTube). In a long part, one chapter per mission lets viewers come back to where they left off. A description for a story part might read:
00:00 Intro and recap02:15 Mission 119:40 Free roam27:05 Mission 248:30 What’s next
Neutral names like “Mission 2” keep the chapters from spoiling the story in the first weeks; rename them later if you want search on the mission names.
7. Spoilers: title, thumbnail, chapters
People look for ways to dodge GTA 6 spoilers: on October 13, 2026 Google’s search box, in English, suggested “gta 6 spoiler blocker” and “grand theft auto 6 spoiler warnings”. Keeping your own uploads spoiler-free is part of the edit.
- Title: say where the video is (“Part 3”, “ending”) without saying what happens.
- Thumbnail: no deaths, no final mission, no twist; a character or a place from early in the story is safe.
- Chapters: neutral names for story missions in the first weeks.
- Warning: at the start of story parts and of the full movie, said and on screen.
8. Audio and export
- Voice over game: the game drops under your voice, not the other way round, and comes back up in the action.
- The radio: in sessions you plan to monetize, lower or mute the in-game radio and listen to the export for songs that could be claimed (why).
- One loudness for the whole video: a three-hour part that jumps in volume makes viewers reach for the volume button, or leave; how loud big channels upload is in my loudness study.
- One export per part, uploaded with the chapters already in the description.
Where this workflow comes from
I haven’t edited GTA for a client yet. This is the workflow I use for long story and gaming videos in Roblox and Minecraft, such as Swaylemc’s full movies of 60 to 234 minutes, applied to what is confirmed about GTA 6. The parts that are specific to GTA 6, like the 1-hour PS5 files and the chapters per mission, come from the official pages linked in the sources below.
FAQ
How do you edit a long GTA 6 gameplay video?
Log the session while you play, choose the cut, open on a hook without gore, cut travel and menus, add a chapter per mission, check spoilers and the radio, and export one file per part.
How long should a GTA 6 walkthrough part be?
As long as the part needs; Typical Gamer’s last two walkthrough parts each ran past an hour and a half. For a story or highlights video, the GTA middle range in the sample I read was 17 to 43 minutes.
How do I add chapters to a GTA 6 video?
Put timestamps in the description: the first at 00:00, at least three in ascending order, each chapter at least 10 seconds long. One chapter per mission works for long parts.
How do I avoid spoilers in GTA 6 videos?
Keep twists out of the title, the thumbnail and the chapter names, use neutral mission names in the first weeks, and put a spoiler warning at the start of story parts.
Can I record GTA 6 in 4K on PS5?
The PS5 records in 4K with a compatible display, according to PlayStation Support. Sony also says some scenes are blocked from capture, so check what GTA 6 lets you record on launch day; each built-in recording still stops at 1 hour.
What software do I need to edit GTA 6 videos?
Any editor that handles long timelines well, such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. The workflow on this page matters more than the program.
