How long should a YouTube video be in 2026?
Direct answer: There is no official ideal length, but 8 minutes is the practical floor for a monetized long video, because YouTube allows mid-roll ads only from 8 minutes. Across 1,159 long-form videos I edited for 46 client channels, the median was 12.1 minutes and 98% ran 8 minutes or more.
What does YouTube itself say about video length?
None of the YouTube Help pages I read on October 15, 2026 recommends an ideal length. What they do set are limits and thresholds:
- 8 minutes for mid-roll ads. "On monetized videos that are 8 minutes or longer, you can turn on ads during the middle of the video" (YouTube Help: mid-roll ad breaks).
- 15 minutes until you verify. By default an account can upload videos up to 15 minutes long; verified accounts can go longer (YouTube Help: upload videos longer than 15 minutes).
- 12 hours or 256 GB. The maximum upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less (same page).
- 3 minutes for a Short. Square or vertical videos up to three minutes count as Shorts (YouTube Help: three-minute Shorts).
So the official answer is a range, not a number: anything from a 3-minute Short to a 12-hour upload is allowed, and the 8-minute mark only matters for mid-roll ads.
How long are the long-form videos I edit? 1,159 videos, 46 channels
I read the length and views of every long-form client video in my YT Jobs record through the YouTube Data API on October 13, 2026: 1,159 videos from 46 channels, mostly Roblox and Minecraft, with 4 Shorts (180 seconds or less) left out. The median was 12.1 minutes (middle half between 9.7 and 18.6), 98.0% ran 8 minutes or more, 71.4% ran 10 minutes or more and 23.0% ran 20 minutes or more.
| Length | Videos | Share | Median length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 8 min | 23 | 2.0% | 6.7 min |
| 8 to 9:59 | 308 | 26.6% | 8.9 min |
| 10 to 19:59 | 562 | 48.5% | 12.5 min |
| 20 to 34:59 | 118 | 10.2% | 26.1 min |
| 35 min or more | 148 | 12.8% | 43.2 min |
| All | 1,159 | 100% | 12.1 min |
Do longer videos get more views?
Not reliably. Comparing raw views across channels mixes a 10K channel with a 2M one, so I compared each video with the median video of its own channel (1.00 = as many views as that channel's typical video). This uses the 7 channels with at least 20 videos old enough to compare (90 days or more), 859 videos:
| Length | Videos | Views vs channel median | Share above the channel median |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 to 9:59 | 228 | 0.78× | 40% |
| 10 to 19:59 | 447 | 1.05× | 54% |
| 20 to 34:59 | 68 | 0.93× | 47% |
| 35 min or more | 113 | 1.13× | 54% |
Two things stand out. Inside each length band the middle half of videos runs from about 0.5× to 1.7× or more of the channel median, a spread far bigger than the gap between bands, so the topic of a video matters more than its runtime. And the hits are not oddly long or short: of the 20 most-viewed videos on each of those 7 channels, 86 of 140 (61%) were within 25% of that channel's usual length.
So how long should your video be?
- Start from your own channel's usual length. Your best videos most likely sit near it, as they do on the channels above.
- Let the format decide. In the same data, Roblox Rivals news videos had a median of 10.9 minutes (255 videos), Dress To Impress 9.9 (282), 99 Nights in the Forest 16.7 (60), horror games 35.2 (93) and full Minecraft horror movies 188.2 (13).
- Cross 8 minutes only if the content fills it. Mid-rolls need 8 minutes, but padding a 6-minute idea to 8 costs more attention than the extra ad earns. These numbers do not measure ad revenue, so I can't tell you the break-even.
Limits of this data
These are videos I edited for clients, not a sample of YouTube: 85% of the views comparison comes from 7 channels and 28% from one. Views were read on October 13, 2026, and older videos have had longer to collect them, which is why videos under 90 days old are left out of every views figure. It measures length and views only, not retention, click-through rate or revenue, and it does not show that length causes views. The full method is in YouTube editing statistics 2026.
How it works with me
Send your channel link and a clip. I edit a free 1-minute test on your own footage, and I usually reply within a few hours. No contract: each video is quoted on its own, the first one comes back in 1 to 5 days and the next ones usually in 1 to 2, and every revision comes back within 24 hours. My public record is on YT Jobs: 1,250 videos and 147.6M views.
My price: $55–$150 per finished video depending on complexity; up to $300 for some long or complex edits.
Quick answers
How long should a YouTube video be in 2026?
There is no official ideal length, but 8 minutes is the practical floor for a monetized long video, because YouTube allows mid-roll ads only from 8 minutes. Across 1,159 long-form videos I edited for 46 client channels, the median was 12.1 minutes and 98% ran 8 minutes or more.
Is 8 minutes still the best length for a YouTube video?
It is the minimum for mid-roll ads, not a best length. YouTube Help says mid-rolls can run on monetized videos 8 minutes or longer. In my sample of 1,159 client videos, 98% ran at least 8 minutes, but the 8 to 10 minute band got 0.78× its channel's median views.
Do 20-minute videos get more views than 10-minute videos?
Not reliably. Compared with their own channel's median, videos of 10 to 20 minutes got 1.05× and videos of 20 to 35 minutes got 0.93× across 7 channels I edit. The spread inside each band was much bigger than the difference between bands.
How long can a YouTube video be?
Up to 15 minutes by default, and longer once the account is verified. The maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, according to YouTube Help (read October 15, 2026).
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to three minutes. YouTube Help says square or vertical videos up to three minutes long count as Shorts (read October 15, 2026).
