Every number on this page comes either from my own measurements of public YouTube videos or from YouTube's own announcements, and links to where it comes from. Use them, quote them, check them.
Key numbers: big YouTube channels master their videos anywhere from -24 to -7 LUFS (median -16.3), and the player turns the loud ones down to -14. Top creators speak at about 179 words per minute. Narrated documentary channels change the picture from 2 to 15 times a minute. Since August 24, 2026, a public view counts from the first frame.
How loud are YouTube videos?
From 50 recent long-form videos by 25 large channels, measured in September 2026:
- Median integrated loudness: -16.3 LUFS; half of the videos between -18.2 and -14.1. (loudness study)
- Full range: -24.3 to -7.4 LUFS. The two loudest were both MrBeast uploads. (loudness study)
- 12 of 50 were louder than -14 LUFS; 9 of 50 were quieter than -20. (loudness study)
- In YouTube's player, loud videos (-7.4 to -13.2 LUFS) played at -14; videos near -24 played at about -20 and were not raised further (5 videos checked in "Stats for nerds"). (loudness study)
- 29 of 50 files YouTube served had true peaks above 0 dBTP after encoding. (loudness study)
How fast do YouTubers talk, and how long are their videos?
- Median speech pace: about 179 words per minute; half between 164 and 191; range about 105 to 291. (loudness study)
- The voice starts within the first second in 43 of 50 videos. (loudness study)
- Median length of the most-viewed recent long-form uploads: 28.4 minutes; 33 of 50 ran 20 minutes or longer. (loudness study)
How often do documentary channels cut?
Three narrated documentary channels, measured frame by frame:
- Picture changes per minute range from about 2 (Librarian, 29.4-second median shot) to about 13-15 (Philip Thompson and The Interpreter, 4.1-5.0-second median shots): a factor of about six within one genre. (pacing data)
- Philip Thompson's pace falls through the video: about 19 changes a minute in the cold open, 14.5 in minutes 0-10, 12.5 in 10-25, 10.8 in 25-30 and 8.2 in the closing. (pacing data)
- The Interpreter joins shots with hard cuts (26 of 26 checked) and keeps text on screen 34-42% of the time; Philip Thompson shows text 19.6% of the time. (pacing data)
How loud is music under a voiceover?
- Music beds sit about 24 dB (The Interpreter) and 31 dB (Librarian) under the voice, measured as loudness. (music-level data)
- Short sound hits come closer, around 10 dB under the voice. (music-level data)
- Loudness range stays tiny on all three channels measured: 2.5 to 3.0 LU. (music-level data)
- One of the three (Philip Thompson) plays music only in the cold open and the ending, with a dry voice in between. (music-level data)
What changed on YouTube in 2026?
- Since August 24, 2026, a public view counts from the first frame in every format; earnings, the Partner Program and analytics (CTR, average view duration, retention) still run on engaged views. (YouTube Official Blog)

How were these numbers measured?
Loudness is ITU-R BS.1770 integrated loudness on the audio YouTube serves, cross-checked with FFmpeg on two videos (identical to the decimal). Speech pace comes from each video's captions over the full length. Cut rates were measured frame by frame on the three documentary channels only; on gameplay footage the same detector counted camera movement as cuts, so no cut rates are published for gaming channels. Each linked page has the full method, the video list and the limits.
