Across 50 recent long-form videos from 25 large YouTube channels, measured in September 2026, the median loudness was -16.3 LUFS and the median speech pace about 179 words a minute. Across 1,159 long-form client videos measured on October 13, 2026, the median length was 12.1 minutes, and 98% ran 8 minutes or longer.

How loud are YouTube videos?
From 50 recent long-form videos by 25 large channels, measured in September 2026:
- Median integrated loudness: -16.3 LUFS; half of the videos between -18.2 and -14.1. (loudness study)
- Full range: -24.3 to -7.4 LUFS. The two loudest were both MrBeast uploads. (loudness study)
- 12 of 50 were louder than -14 LUFS; 9 of 50 were quieter than -20. (loudness study)
- In YouTube's player, loud videos (-7.4 to -13.2 LUFS) played at -14; videos near -24 played at about -20 and were not raised further (5 videos checked in "Stats for nerds"). (loudness study)
- 29 of 50 files YouTube served had true peaks above 0 dBTP after encoding. (loudness study)

How long are long-form client videos?
From 1,159 long-form videos on 46 client channels tracked on my YT Jobs profile, with lengths read from the YouTube Data API on October 13, 2026 (the 4 Shorts of 3 minutes or less left out):

Half of the videos run between 9.7 and 18.6 minutes, and 98% run 8 minutes or longer, the length from which monetized videos can carry mid-roll ads. 1,147 of the 1,159 come from gaming channels, so this describes gaming channels, not YouTube as a whole. How often do documentary channels cut?
Three narrated documentary channels, measured frame by frame. Picture changes per minute range from about 2 to about 13-15: a factor of about six within one genre. (pacing data)

How loud is music under a voiceover?
- Music beds sit about 24 dB (The Interpreter) and 31 dB (Librarian) under the voice, measured as loudness. (music-level data)
- Short sound hits come closer, around 10 dB under the voice. (music-level data)
- Loudness range stays tiny on all three channels measured: 2.5 to 3.0 LU. (music-level data)
- One of the three (Philip Thompson) plays music only in the cold open and the ending, with a dry voice in between. (music-level data)
What changed on YouTube in 2026?
- Since August 24, 2026, a public view counts from the first frame in every format; earnings, the Partner Program and analytics (CTR, average view duration, retention) still run on engaged views. (YouTube Official Blog)
- Estimated effect: public long-form counts about 30% above engaged views (a modeled estimate from 35,800 videos, not a YouTube figure). (Agentio)

How were these numbers measured?
Loudness is ITU-R BS.1770 integrated loudness on the audio YouTube serves, cross-checked with FFmpeg on two videos (identical to the decimal). Speech pace comes from each video's captions over the full length. Lengths of the 1,159 client videos come from the YouTube Data API, read on October 13, 2026, with Shorts of 3 minutes or less left out. Cut rates were measured frame by frame on the three documentary channels only; on gameplay footage the same detector counted camera movement as cuts, so no cut rates are published for gaming channels. On three narrated documentary channels measured frame by frame, the picture changed from about 2 times a minute (Librarian, 29.4-second median shot) to about 13 to 15 times a minute (Philip Thompson and The Interpreter, 4.1 to 5.0-second median shots).
How loud should background music be under a voiceover on YouTube?
